Chapter 26

After eating breakfast and plotting their next moves, Sledge and his team exited the café. Souza and Mya chatted while Trixie took in the sights of the oceanfront Brazilian city that was basked in the warm glow of the sun.

Sledge typed out a brief but concise message on his phone to Charles about the team’s next moves. The one thing Sledge didn’t want was to have Charles calling or texting him during their meeting with Valle. That tended to ruffle feathers and make already suspicious individuals leerier of strangers.

We’re running down a few leads this morning with Souza in Fortaleza. A contact of his that might be able to help. Going silent so don’t bother calling or texting. I’ll get back to you when I can.

After hitting send, Sledge looked up from the device as they approached the sedan. Mya took the front passenger seat this time as Sledge climbed into the back with Trixie to go over the images and details of the street surrounding the meeting place with Carlos Valle.

“Is Charles blowing up your phone already this morning?” Mya asked as she shut the car door.

“No. I went ahead and decided to be a bit more proactive and provide him with an update so he doesn’t bother me when we’re in the meeting with Valle,” Sledge replied as the remaining car doors slammed shut. “I’m trying to hedge any calls or texts from him so he doesn’t cause a problem with our guy. You know how much I like issues.”

“Oh, you love them,” Trixie replied as she steadied the laptop on her thighs. “If I do remember, you talk all the time about how much you love having problems while on a job.”

The phone buzzed an incoming message. Sledge flipped it over and peered at the received text from Charles.

“Roger that. Keep me updated. I’ll do the same. Watch your six. Talk soon.”

Souza dropped his phone onto his lap, then backed out of the parking slot on the east side of the building. His footwork on the brake was harder than it had been, causing the sedan to suddenly stop and jostle Trixie’s laptop.

“Hey. Can we be a bit more careful up there behind the wheel?” she asked while clutching her rig. “This is a delicate piece of equipment. We can’t afford for it to get damaged.”

“So sorry. My apologies,” Souza replied as he piloted the sedan across the shallow parking lot to the bustling street ahead.

Sledge draped his arm over the back of the seat behind Trixie’s head as they merged into traffic. “How long a drive is it to where we’re meeting Valle?”

“About fifteen minutes,” Souza answered.

“Any word from Valle yet on what time we’re meeting with him?” Mya asked as she adjusted on the passenger seat. “We burned a good hour in that café after you made the call to him. I’d like to have plenty of time to scout the area and pick out our vantage points before you two go in.”
